In The Blood (slightly NSFW)

Have you ever heard a song that spoke to you so instantly that before it was over you were singing along with it, even though you’d never heard it before? That was me with John Mayer’s In The Blood. This song is about how our dysfunctional family relationships can impact our romantic (and other) relationships. There are 3 verses, and while I relate to all three, it’s particularly the second one that really resonates with me, because it describes my own father so perfectly.

How much of my father am I destined to become?
Will I dim the lights inside me just to satisfy someone?
Will I let this woman kill me or do away with jealous love?
Will it wash out in the water or is it always in the blood?

Lost Little Lamb

Let’s just get three things out there. 1. I am so not a “neat freak (not that there’s anything wrong with being one… tbh I kind of wouldn’t mind a little of it myself!). 2. I have ADD, and so when I do get uh a bit obsessive about something, it can become an extreme thing. 3. Despite my general laissez faire attitude towards clutter, one place where the ADD takes over is my computer’s desktop. You can see what it looks like currently here, if you’re intrigued.

The shortcut on my desktop is there to remind me to try to learn to vlog by watching Berry’s tutorial on the topic. Once I actually try it, that shortcut will go. I hate shortcuts on my desktop. You may also notice that I have a folder called “SL Pics.” My blogging routine goes like this. I take photos and they save to my desktop. I pick the ones to edit, and the rest go in the trash. I edit the ones I’ve kept. They then stay on my desktop until I blog them, to help remind me to do it. Except, this time the photo Lucie Had A Little Lamb accidentally got put into my folder before I blogged it… which brings me to the title of this post. Poor little lamb was lost and never blogged. I realized it going through my photostream this morning and it was a major facepalms sort of moment. So, without further ado…

Lucie had a little lamb

The water understands

I love water. Maybe it’s from growing up on the East Coast (New Jersey), but for whatever reason I have always been drawn to it. In SL, I spent years living in the sky and desperately missed water, because in my opinion, the Linden water is one of the most beautiful parts of SL. Now that I have a homestead to decorate at my whim, water is always a big part of my sim design. Still, for this post I decided I wanted to “travel” in SL and I took the opportunity to visit Vintage Lace. This new sim is open to the public, but also has 3 residences, so if you visit please be sure to respect the privacy of the sim’s tenants. I’m wearing a playful, sexy new sundress from Neve that you can snag at Mesh Body Addicts, which is open through March 31st. My sexy sandals are from Reign, a recent release that includes 3 different styles of ribbons (ankle, shown here, knee high and thigh high). My bracelets are by Cae and are at Cosmopolitan until March 26th. I am wearing SLink’s Hourglass body with the highly anticipated, newly updated SLink hands, which are now bento compatible! The new Dynamic hands will replace your old hands, if you so choose. You can learn more on the official SLink blog post about this exciting release! I’m also using FATE’s bento hand poser, which is how I got my crossed fingers. It’s so much fun to have this added flexibility!

Monochrome Moonlight

This hair is a new release from Magika. I’ve loved Sabina Gully’s work for years, so whenever she releases something new I get pretty excited. The beautiful Catwa applier I have on is Cintia, new from [theSkinnery] and available at Ultra through the end of the month. It’s really lovely, and again it’s a skin that makes me feel a bit like a pixie. I added Izzie’s beauty mole applier and also Izzie’s natural crease set with eyeliner. I love how it helps define the waterline.

The water understands

The title of this post comes from a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Unwrapping a shiny New Year!

For those who have been celebrating, happy Orthodox Christmas/Epiphany to you. This is a special day for me because it’s the anniversary of the first time I ever spoke to my husband, 18 years ago. We made our first date plans over the phone and spent a couple of hours getting to know each other. I always think of it as the day of our personal epiphanies.

I’ve got 3 pics for you today, and the final pic is slightly NSFW. I began the new year with a stomach bug that had me mostly in bed for several days now but I’m finally feeling more myself. I hope your start to 2017 was more cheerful!

First, if you haven’t already seen it, LeLutka has released the updated, Bento compatible version of their popular Simone head. If you already own the original Simone head, wear it when you buy the new one and you will be refunded 50% (the original purchase price of $L2500), which is just awesome! I think this is a stunning head, which was very easy to customize. This new option is great for those who’ve craved a mesh head but wanted to keep their own face, and multiple stores, including Catwa have released bento heads. I already owned Simone, and the updated version was a gift from a dear friend. The new LeLutka HUD is really sleek and easy to use. Definitely check it out. As always, it includes a base skin from Glam Affair, but GA also released several brand new appliers for it which can be found right at LeLutka, in the Undivided section where you’ll find all of their mesh heads. Please note this is the ONLY pre-existing head that is being updated to be Bento compatible. I am wearing Simone with the new Lucrezia applier, which is available at Uber. The eye makeup I have on is from the Simone hud, however. My necklace and earrings by Cae are the exclusive Gifts of the Guardians that you can get from the Gos & Cae collaboration at Gacha Guardians.

Happy New Year!

In both pics I am wearing the Christina gown released at the Just Because mainstore right around the holidays. This gown is absolutely stunning and I could not choose a single color, so I had to change it for the headshot. This can be worn without the fur jacket, which makes it extremely versatile, and while it was the perfect dress for the holiday season, it certainly works year round, with or without the jacket! My malt is wearing a suit from Deadwool. This particular pattern was a limited edition, but it’s available in other colors and it’s really so well done.

Auld Lang Syne

Finally, I knew I wanted to do this last picture the second I saw this clever collaboration between SLC and Sallie at October’s round of The Epiphany. I thought, a tied up, sexy Christmas gift type pic would be hot. This one’s below the cut since it’s sorta NSFW.

She’s marrying Bru.

Summer Sisters by Judy Blume has long been my favorite (stand alone, anyway) book. I bought it as a new release, in hardcover, back in 1998. It was quite the luxury purchase, even though as an immediate best seller, Barnes & Noble had it discounted pretty heavily. It was the first hardcover book I ever bought new, not counting textbooks.

I have read it every summer since. Sometimes I read it more than once in a year. I have passages of it memorized. I think of it randomly, and sometimes quote it before even realizing where the quote is from. Suffice it to say, I love this book.

I’ve wanted to do this scene, one of the most powerful in the book, for as long as I can remember. My first alt in SL was named Vix (the nickname of the character I am portraying here). And finally, after I finished reading it this summer, I decided it was time to just get it done!

"She's marrying Bru."

Also, if you haven’t read the book, this is something you find out in the prologue, though the actual scene portrayed above happens later in the book. So it’s not a spoiler, and you can still pick the book up and read it. And I highly recommend it, but I’m obviously biased.

You may have noticed a lack of blogging here lately. A lot has been happening in RL, but the main challenge I’ve had is issues with our ISP CenturyLink. We’re having exactly the kinds of problems SL most hates… latency and packet loss. Blah. It means I spend a lot of time in SL with things constantly rebaking, and that makes picture taking a challenge. They’re working on it. It’s somewhat better. But that’s why things have been quiet here of late. Hoping that changes, and soon!

Where the ocean meets the land

I fell head over heels in love with this adorable Alice Project hair released at Hair Fair 2016. The (literal) hair bow and braid are so sweet and just perfectly done. I knew this was one I’d need to shoot from the back, to really show how gorgeous it is, but the front is very pretty, too. I’m wearing the frilled swim bottom in bloom that is part of Neve’s recent, ginormous swim collection release. What’s cool is you can mix and match the tops and bottoms, making these really customizable. But I decided to be a bit sassy and just wear the cute, ruffly bottom for this pic!

where the ocean meets the land

I wanted to show you the new LAQ mesh head, Trinity. This is LAQ’s first foray into mesh heads, and I really love it. The shape of the face is so beautifully done. There are a few things that particularly stand out for me about LAQ’s head. First off, it’s OMEGA compatible out of the box. No add on to buy or wear. You can wear any OMEGA applier you’d like with it. Secondly, it has a really nice, clean hud. It’s very user friendly and not overly complicated, which is something I think is a particular bonus for anyone who has wanted a mesh head, but maybe has felt overwhelmed by all the huds and options. I’m wearing the built in default applier, which is called Wilma, and is also available for sale at the LAQ store, so if you like the applier but are attached to your current head (no pun intended), you can demo it and see if you like it on that head (as long as it’s OMEGA compatible). There are also multiple other appliers available for it, including some of LAQ’s more popular older skins, like Elena. Also, I’m still wearing the Jennilynn hair here, so you can see how sweet and pretty the front bangs are.

Trinity

Hair Fair 2016 wraps up this weekend, closing with Bandana Day on Sunday, July 31st. This annual event is truly amazing, and something I always look forward to, so be sure to look out for my Bandana Day ensemble on Sunday! In the meantime, be sure you go and grab your own bandanas. They’re only L$50 per bandana, with 100% of the proceeds going to charity, and there are – as always – some truly incredible and creative options to choose from… even if you’re not a blogger, it’s a great cause and you get something fun and unique out of it!

I stand for peace…

When I first heard of the “I stand for peace” challenge presented by The White Canvas Gallery, I have to admit… my tendency towards cynicism won over. My first, honest thought? I’d love to stand for peace, but my legs are going to get awfully tired. But being me is complicated. Because even though I can be cynical (though I tend to prefer to think I’m just realistic), I can also be idealistic. So, I have said it before and I’ll say it now: I’m a realistic idealist. I can recognize when I’m being idealistic, but I refuse to give up the idea that there’s a place for idealism in this world.

I really like this quote, and not just because I consider Sara Teasdale to be one of the most underrated poets in history.

I make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes. ~Sara Teasdale

I like to think I manage to do this most of the time. My life has been interesting and difficult. Full of love, but also challenges. However, I like to believe that, when faced with hardships, I find a way to make the best of a bad situation. To find the proverbial silver lining. So, even though I fear that we’re living in a time that will face far more violence before we achieve anything akin to peace, I also think we can find ways to look for peace from within, to take strength from the stories of others; of those who survive, of those who saved, of those who died so others might live. We can see the beauty that is always here, and remember the wise words of Dumbledore (via JK Rowling): Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.

It seemed fitting to blog this challenge using one of the gorgeous hairs you can find at Hair Fair 2016. I feel that this event is an example of the best of humanity, of the goodness and love that exists in this world, and I mean the real one as well as our virtual one. Because, after all, this event benefits real life children. Also appropriate, I felt, was to use something currently available at The Epiphany – these adorable butterflies from Cubic Cherry Creations. For if ever the world needed another epiphany, the time would be now.

My hair is from Mina. I loved the windblown feel of this hair, and I’ve always been a huge fan of Mina’s red shades. My adorable capri pants are by Just Because for N21 and I’m wearing the N21 exclusive color, which will not be available when the event ends! The tank top I’m wearing is one of Neve’s summer offerings. My sandals are from fri.day, and fri.day has moved to a new location, so be sure to update your LM!

I stand for peace

Now I have to talk about this gorgeous new mesh head from Catwa. Bibi has such a sweet, youthful face. It felt perfect for this dreamy, peaceful look I wanted. I paired it with Glam Affair’s Gabriela applier, which is part of the Gacha Guardians event. If you’ve been looking for a mesh head with a young, soft vibe, definitely go demo this one. Bibi is a basic head, which means you can get the static version of it for just $L900. You can check out this image, which explains all of the various options available on Catwa heads.

Sweet Bibi

If you haven’t done the “I stand for peace” challenge yet, consider it. It’s simple, but powerful. And I was nominated by the lovely Saffie to do it, so really… I had to.

This is the first of my Hair Fair 2016 posts. This fabulous event is open, and of course part of the proceeds from every sale will go to Wigs For Kids. It’s a great cause, with a ton of hair designers. There’s something to suit everyone’s tastes there, so definitely check it out. You can find all of the information you need, including a map, on the official blog. I’m wearing one of ISON’s lovely releases – Marie – in these photos. I’m also wearing one of Catwa’s newer head releases, Dyana, with the Bambi applier that Pink Fuel released for it at Kawaii Project.

My cute little dress is from Blueberry, and the strappy, sexy heels I’m wearing are from Glamistry. This adorable pose, which comes with the bubbles prop you see, is from Infiniti and is available at The Season’s Story. I’m using the Trompe Loleil Zohra Oasis, which is available at the current round of Uber. You have a few more days before this round closes and there are lots of awesome items there, so go check it out.

Here’s a better look at the shoes! The BBQ set you see in all three pics is from Dynasty’s release for The Epiphany. It’s a super cute set, and one of many amazing things you can find at this round of the event!

Finally, here’s the YouTube video that inspired two of the titles of these pics.

Over the rainbow

The Pulse Fundraiser is winding down. It will close in just under 24 hours, so if you haven’t gone yet, hurry! If you’re not sure what I am talking about, this fundraiser is benefitting the families and victims of the horrific incident that took place last month at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. There are a ton of fabulous designers participating, not to mention auction boards where you can bid on some fabulous people and/or prizes.

I wanted to do something sparkly, cheerful and dreamy. So I went to StoryBrooke Gardens and, just by chance, found this giant book. And the quote on the page… “hope springs eternal.” It just seemed perfect. I’m the odd mix of realist and idealist. I often say I’m a realistic idealist. I want to believe change is possible, that things can be different. That the world, as ugly as it can be, is also still full of so much that is beautiful and good. And when I see the SL community come together for an event like this, it’s just that much easier for me to hold on to that hope.

I’m wearing a lot of items you can find at the event. My hair is from Exile, the dress is Valentina E. The body glitter and bracelet are both Izzie’s. My shoes are Reign. The adorable star “freckles” are Vile Cult.

Over The Rainbow

In this pic, you can better see the cute star tattoos, along with the beautiful applier Glam Affair released for Uber. Although this applier was designed with Annie in mind, I am wearing it with Alice here… and I think it’s pretty adorable!

Rainbow Sprinkles

Definitely be sure to run over to the Pulse Fundraiser before it ends. It’s worth it! You get to support a great cause while buying beautiful things. Or bidding on beautiful prizes/people!
