I’m just chewing gum

Recently, I happened upon a new-to-me artist named Nina Nesbitt and her song Chewing Gum. One of the lines is “cuz I’m a made-up mess in a backless dress” and well, I was already wearing this sexy backless dress from Neve, which you can grab at Uber through September 23rd on and it just seemed like kismet. I styled the rest of the look around the sexy, peppy song. My hair is a recent Mainstore release from Truth called Lady, and it includes multiple styling options, which you can see here. The killer red heels I have on are from Ingenue’s Cosette gacha at The Arcade, and this is just one of 16 colors to collect!

I'm a made-up mess in a backless dress

I am also wearing a new skin applier by [theSkinnery] for Catwa heads. Karen is available at Ultra through October 8th. I really like this skin. I love the messy brows and the soft sheen it has. There are also really cute crinkles around the eyes, which make me happy. While I can appreciate the absolute flawlessness of some of the skin appliers you find in SL, I also really love seeing the realism offered by creators like Umazuma Metaluna who owns [theSkinnery]. My gorgeous, bold jewelry is Cae’s Anika set which is available at FaMESHed through September 27th.

Below you can watch the video and listen to the song that helped inspire this post. It may not be available in all countries.

Feeling rebellious

I have a confession to make. Whenever I try to do something edgy or punk-like in SL I feel a bit like a poser. I like punk music, but I’m just so not punk in my style in either world, generally speaking. That said, I was feeling a bit rebellious last week and decided to take advantage of that when I was styling this look. My top and bento compatible gloves are both by Fetch and you’ll find them at Rewind. My Catwa applier by [theSkinnery] is also available at Rewind. My pants are from Just Because, who is a guest at Collabor88’s birthday round. Wearing red and purple together was something I did in the 80s when I was a tween and it made my family crazy because they said they didn’t match. Not long after it became trendy to wear those colors together, which helped shut them up a bit. But I didn’t care. I did my own thing, so in that sense I was always a rebel! My adorable bow pumps are from Ingenue, also at Collabor88. The look paired nicely with the Anxiety %ugh! scene currently available at N21 for just L$90. This is a new-to-me store and I love this prop scene. This type of product is great for shooting blog posts when you don’t have the time to set up a compatible scene or find a good location. My pose is by Elephante Poses, and is another Rewind release.

Rebel Rebel

Here’s a close up that shows off my adorable belly ring (rigged!!!) from
Maddict that is at Collabor88, as well as this dazzling chrome French manicure from Alme that is available at Whimsical. I have never once used the pointed nails on my Lara body but this manicure and look just seemed to beg for them! Plus, you get a better look at the Fetch gloves. The metal parts and bows are color change.

No Angel

Finally, a closer look at the Chai applier from [theSkinnery]. I really love this applier and I kept thinking that with the shape I made for it my avi resembled Jennifer Lawrence a bit. I am wearing it on the Catwa Koura bento head. I added an eyeshadow from Milla Rasmuson’s Fire collection (which I blended down a bit with the Catwa hud), which is a Cosmetic Fair release. You also get a closer look at my Truth hair, which is the VIP group gift for August. Like all of Truth’s newest releases, Ellie includes a style hud and gives you a ton of options, including bobbie pins (not visible with the style I selected here). Truth’s VIP gifts have been amazing, so if you’re not part of that group it’s definitely one worth the cost of joining! My eyes are from Buzzeri’s Shift collection. When I last checked these hadn’t been added to the Mainstore yet, but hopefully they will be soon (I need more colors!).

Rebel Rebel

Cosmetic Fair ends August 31st. Rewind runs through September 10th. The big birthday bash for Collab ends September 6th. Whimsical runs through September 18th.

Final hours of The Arcade!

With under 2 days remaining for the June round of The Arcade, I wanted to do a post to remind you to run over there if you haven’t already! Or go back if you want to try one last time for that one item you didn’t get. I’m grilling on Tres Blah’s Summer Fete open grill (a rare), which I was dying to win and finally just yesterday did! My Ingenue shoes are also from The Arcade (more on them in a few). The hat and hair combo is by Truth and you can grab it at Uber (there’s also a hatless version), along with this top from Neve and these adorable shorts from Poppy. I want to say a few things about the top. There are 3 different styles of ruffly tops from Neve at Uber (all named after desserts as sweet as the tops). You should be aware they all have built in arm poses in order to not break the mesh. However, there’s a good variety in sizes and even with my curvier av I found a pose that didn’t put my hands inside me.

Grillin'

What I most wanted to share are the Lykke heels from Ingenue. I blogged a pair of these a few posts back, but this color is special. Not only is it utterly adorable, it’s an exclusive! It is Ingenue’s prize for playing the machine 25 times, and they will never be available again once the event ends. The pattern is called confetti and I fell for it the second I saw it! The colors, the style and just everything about these shoes melted me. They were something I considered a “must have” because they’re different and cute and yeah. I love them, is that obvious yet? To help show off my sassy shoes is one of Jian’s Cheeky Chihuahuas, also at The Arcade. This photo wasn’t edited at all beyond cropping, as I really wanted you to see the pattern detail.

Footloose and fancy free

Finally, I wanted to show off a few items from the current round of Cosmetic Fair, and the freckles applier by [TheSkinnery] that is currently available at Cosmopolitan. My eyeshadow is one of the Tropical eyeshadow by Arte. This palette is bold, shiny and gorgeous. I’ve used the Catwa hud to blend it a bit, but it’s gorgeous fully bold, too! I’m also wearing one of Bossie’s Summer Lipstick appliers from the event, which again I’ve blended down some (this was to make it work better with the shape of the mouth on my skin applier, which is from [TheSkinnery], too). I’m wearing one of Catwa’s new bento mesh heads, Koura. I demo’d both Koura and Tala (the newest release). Tala is adorable but looked really, really young on me. So if you’re wanting a younger look I definitely say to try it out. I went for Koura because it was a bit more mature and just overall felt more like me. My necklace is a sequel to Cae’s Kitten release. This one features gemstones instead of pearls, and you can find it in the Mainstore now.

Turquoise eyes under a turquoise sky

This is my final post before I leave for vacation Saturday, but I return July 10th so look for a new post later that week!

Blushing Brides

A couple of months back I fell in love with this Eria gown from Dead Dollz. I knew immediately that it would make for a gorgeous wedding gown, but I eschewed the idea of white and went for the nude, as a play on the whole “blushing bride” thing. I’m wearing it with one of Truth’s recent releases. Like his other newer releases this one has a hairstyle HUD with several options. I love messy, curly updos. I’m wearing my Chloe LeLutka head with a Glam Affair applier that was part of June’s LeLutka Powder Pack. The bouquet and pose are part of Foxcity’s Flower bento pose set.

The Blush Bride

When I decided to do this blog post, I originally intended to use my malt. But since I was doing the post in June – LGBTQ+ Pride Month – I decided to use my falt instead. It’s something very important to me, and by complete coincidence I’m posting this on the anniversary of the SCOTUS ruling that overturned DOMA here in the US. It’s fairly well known that I’m bisexual. It worked out that my soul mate was a man, and getting married was not hard for us. But sometimes I can’t help but think, what if it had worked out differently? While I cannot imagine loving anyone other than my husband, there’s no denying that I benefit from living the life of a heterosexual. Since bisexuality isn’t visible, no one knows by looking at me. I never forget the privilege that I get because of that.

To keep with the non-traditional color scheme, I picked a formal gown from Just Because that felt beachy but still formal, in the shade antique. I’m wearing Ingenue’s Lisbet sandals that are at the current round of Collabor88. I picked a blue shade because I wanted to add just a touch of tradition but in a unique way! Her hair is also from Collabor88, by Exile.

The heat is on

Summer is creeping up on us… or at least on those of us in the Northern hemisphere. In SL, you can’t escape this. Designers are creating gorgeous, must have summer items like crazy! What Next released this stunning outdoor bar recently, and there are two versions. One has all the alcohol and fruity summer drinks you might expect, but the other has coffee! I love this because it means this is a piece you’ll be able to use on an outdoor autumn or winter patio, too! You can barely see the bar in the pic below, since I was standing behind it, having a beer (which I despise in RL, incidentally). I definitely hope to shoot it again, from an angle where you’ll see it better. But you don’t have to wait! Click here to see the ad for this gorgeous release so you can get a better feel for what it offers.

I’m wearing Pink Fuel’s newly released Jacqueline skin applier for Catwa heads. I love this applier. As is always the case with Mochi Milena’s skins, it’s really soft. Plus, she’s one of the only designers I know who has body appliers that give you options for body type. So if you want your av to appear athletic, ripped or – in my case – curvy, that’s possible! This is a really nice touch that I wish more designers would offer.

My hair is Truth’s VIP gift from May. If you haven’t heard, Truth redid all his colors and textures, and I fell head over heels for this darker blonde with its honey highlights. I’m not sure I’ve ever been blonde in SL before, and I was never really tempted to be but this color might make an appearance again soon! Truth has also added “styling huds” to his new hair releases, which let you tweak the looks of the hairstyles. This is so cool and definitely adds some versatility. To see the ad for Kare (along with the inset style hud options), click here. As of this writing (June 4th at 10:20 pm SLT) the May gift is still available for VIP members. The VIP fee is $L350, which is well worth it for the fatpack of colors and the styling huds. Past VIP gifts can be bought for L$500 so even if you miss it, you can still buy it later. It’s one of those styles that’s so simple and effortless and I know I’ll use it a lot. I wish my RL hair looked like this, in fact!

My necklace is from Cae. It was released at the last round of ROMP, which is now over, but should be in the Mainstore soon. What I always love about Cae’s collars is how versatile they are. They’re great for people who maybe want to be collared, but with something less obvious, or just if you like the style! If you are looking for a pretty summer necklace, you can wear the version without RLV. This reminds me of some of the necklaces I wore in the summers in the last 90s, and I loved it right away.

My eyes are another color in The Skinnery’s Don’t Speak release available at Rewind through June 10th. The top I have on is part of Blueberry’s May Luxe Box bikini, which is adorable. The straps and inner fabric change independently of each other, and you can come up with so many great color combos, or do a mono look if you prefer!

Refresh

My sandals are fri.day’s release for The Arcade – because yes, another round of this beloved event is upon us! My little furry companion is also an Arcade release by JIAN. He’s pretty cute, isn’t he? My capris are from Decoy and you can grab them at the current round of Collabor88 before it ends this week.

Lady of the lake

When I saw Decoy’s mermaid gacha for Lootbox, I was really excited. I mean, who doesn’t want to be a mermaid? This gacha has it all, including body jewels, a crown in multiple colors and a trident (neither featured here). There are gorgeous pastel color options that are more typically associated with mermaids, but I found myself surprisingly drawn to the black tail and shell bra. I decided to create an underwater scene that was like a lake, instead of the more expected ocean. Maybe it’s from reading Harry Potter so many times!

Lady of the lake

I’m wearing League’s recent LeLutka applier release (it was at Skin Fair, so if it’s not in the Mainstore yet, I imagine it will be soon). I really liked this applier, particularly because you get eyeshadow options ON the applier, meaning you can add eyeliner (it even comes with several eyeliner styles) or other shadow on the eyeshadow layer. That’s something I haven’t seen before, so I was pretty excited by that.
My hair is Truth’s current Uber release – Cheri – and it has two versions. One goes over both shoulders, but I opted for the version that only goes over one. I’m still having fun playing with different hair colors, as you can see! My eyes are Izzie’s recent Tokyo Lights version. The original darker ones and the Lights are both gorgeous. They also come with Catwa appliers, for those of you wearing Catwa eyes.

Electric Youth

I feel like the era of my tweens and early teens (aka late 80s/early 90s) is suddenly super popular again. From the recent debut of the Rewind event, with it’s 90’s theme, to some of the fun color combos at various events (like Uber), it just feels a bit surreal.

So maybe it’s not surprising that I found myself feeling a big nostalgic, and that before long said nostalgia led me to listen to Electric Youth, which came out in 1989. This iconic Debbie Gibson album inspired a line of cosmetics and a fragrance, all of which I – naturally – had. See, I was fascinated by Debbie Gibson. She wrote all of the songs on her album, and she also produced six of the ten tracks on the album entirely on her own. It was only with her first album that I had learned a strange lesson… not all singers are songwriters. Up until Out of the Blue got a lot of attention for having been written by a 16 year-old, it never dawned on me that singers didn’t also write their song lyrics or music. This is undoubtedly the result of being a songwriter’s daughter; my dad was in bands my entire childhood, and they wrote everything they did that wasn’t a cover and my dad was the primary lyricist. So it kind of never occurred to me that other people didn’t write their own songs.

At any rate, this revelation made Debbie Gibson a hero of mine. I was six years younger than her, but she was doing amazing things. Then she became Eponine in Les Mis (“On My Own” was “my” song; I sang it in 8th grade and related deeply to it), and that just sealed it for me. Debbie Gibson was totally amazing.

So, this was my tribute to that time in my life… a skort (!) and chunky plastic ring from Decoy, a cropped t-shirt with the word “dazed” from Tee*Fy at N21, some curly pigtails and blunt bangs, brand new from Truth and available at the current round of Uber. Uber has a brand new layout to help make shopping easier., and a great big bubble of pink gum, thanks to Catwa. Oh, and the perfect 90s-esque photo backdrop courtesy of Mons! I swear I know someone with framed prints that looked like this wall.

Pop Sugar

I just got the Catwa (bento) Kimberly head, as a birthday gift from a dear friend. I chose Kimberly over Catya and Lilo, Catwa’s other two heads (another one, Lona, is either newly out or about to be released) neither of which felt very “me,” even with shape changes. But Kimberly does! It’s very cute and works well with fuller lips and larger eyes. I am featuring some items from the February Powder Pack here. This skin applier is Kelly, from Amara. I wasn’t familiar with Amara but I loved this applier. That’s one of the fun things about these subscription boxes. You get to try out some stores you don’t know! I’m wearing the Powder Pack eyeliner/shadow by DeeTaleZ, which was tintable, so I made it this very 90s teal shade to match my hair. And the lipgloss is from Pink Fuel’s Powder Pack release. My lashes are also from Powder Pack, by Bold & Beauty. I had some trouble adjusting mesh eyes to fit in my Catwa head (and unlike the LeLutka heads, you must use mesh eyes). While Catwa’s heads come with rigged eyes, I wanted more options. Ultimately, the eyes I found easiest to adjust to my shape were from theSkinnery’s Palermo collection. These also have an OMEGA applier version, as well as system eyes. Oh and the adorable moles are another Powder Pack release, from okbye!

Electric Youth

If you missed the Powder Pack you can buy it later, but please note that the original price is $L1500 and after the price is L$3000 so it’s worth it if you love makeup and skins! Plus, there is going to be a LeLutka version starting later this month… now I just have to figure out which version I want! Gah!

Pastel Winter

Since my 2nd week in SL, I have been a redhead. I’ve done a handful of blog posts (often fantasy ones) where I used a different color, but even then I usually went for one with red highlights, if possible. But for some reason I found myself recently compelled to try something new. I decided that pastels would be pretty on this soft skin, with these lovely violet/rainbow eyes from Buzzeri (which are at The Epiphany). This is kind of a big deal for me, because I’m pretty sure that somewhere I’ve said – at least once – that Lucie would always be a redhead. And odds are, I’ll go back to red soon. But I want to experiment a bit first, I think.

In yesterday’s post, I mentioned that I would show you a closeup of Glam Affair’s pretty Hanna applier from Memento Mori. The important thing to know is that while there are a couple of pretty, more natural options on this skin, it also comes in versions with blood! Because Memento Mori, of course, is an event that has a macabre vibe. I do, however, appreciate that Aida Ewing did a couple of versions that were softer. The tone is Polar (which just so you know is NOT built into the Maitreya hud – I had to go get the appliers for it at the Mainstore. It’s also not built into the hud for Vista’s bento hands, so I have the Maitreya hands on here), which is so pale it’s kind of fantasy in and of itself, but this super soft makeup made it look so wintry and I fell in love with it. My hair is a recent Mainstore release from Truth, and my adorable Love Birds necklace is by Cae. It has two little leaves you can customize with initials of your choice (or you can hide one or both). Mine has an L and an R (for “Radagast,” my husband’s SL name). My lashes are Izzie’s for LeLutka, and I love all the different styles you get.

Time for a change

I also have to share the amazing Aurora dress that Annie Melson of Just Because released at Uber. The story behind this design is utterly adorable. Annie’s teenage daughter drew this design! So she made the dress in SL, and she’s paying her daughter for her work. Also, they plan to do more together! It’s just the loveliest story of encouraging her daughter’s dreams and being an awesome mom. I completely adore this. I have said it many times, but Annie is one of the kindest, most genuine people I’ve met in SL. And she’s so talented, a trait she and her daughter clearly share!

My shoes are Grace from Gos. If you missed it, he recently updated a bunch of his older shoes to be compatible with Maitreya and SLink bodies. I’ve always loved his work, so this made me super happy!
