Welcome summer!

It’s officially summer (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), and here in Colorado it has felt like it for days. It’s been unseasonably warm (and we have no ac because most summers we don’t need it). So I couldn’t resist something that felt super summery and comfy in SL. I wasn’t really going for vintage, but it just sort of all fell together, and the look I put together wound up being really vintage. I feel kind of like a pinup girl from the 50s! My hair is one of Exile’s Collabor88 releases, and the Resort theme for this round definitely has a retro vibe. My top from Just Because is also at the current round of Collabor88. The adorable kitten heels I’m wearing are Ingenue’s Dorothy shoes for Vintage Fair. These are only compatible with SLink’s Kitten feet. You can wear the feet even if you wear a Maitreya body, and the shoes made for these feet are always adorable and often feel a bit retro. My shorts are by Neve and are also definitely have a retro vibe, and you can find them at FaMESHed’s June round.

Long hot summer

Now, I have to get to something I am so crazy excited about… LAQ’s newly released Gaia bento mesh head. Now there are a lot of mesh heads out there, so you might wonder what’s special about this particular head. Well, I have an answer for you. It has motion capture animations and they are SO DAMN CUTE. LAQ did a video on their YouTube channel that shows the animations, and it’s definitely worth a watch. I managed to catch this shot mid smirk… and thought it was adorable! In addition to the motion capture moods, there are multiple static poses that are good for photography. I am also wearing Cae’s latest release, Kitten. This necklace and earrings set is for sale at Cosmopolitan. I’m only wearing the necklace, but trust me when I say the earrings are every bit as adorable!

Gaia by LAQ

I really, really love this head. It’s so cute and soft. It took me a bit of playing around to get my shape the way I wanted. To make it easier, I used measurements from 2 of the 5 included shapes as a base and worked from there. But once I got it how I wanted, I was just in love. It’s absolutely gorgeous and I definitely recommend demoing it to see if it suits you. I can’t wait to see what appliers are released by both LAQ and other designers.

Colder Weather

Though I’ve already changed my homestead over to spring, the truth is spring in Colorado, especially at 9,000 feet in the Rockies, often arrives late. However, this year it’s been unseasonably warm for weeks and just in the past few days have we returned to more normal February temperatures (for which I am grateful, as warmer and dry are not good for wildfire season).

If you’re not quite ready to let go of winter yourself this gorgeous coat from Neve might be just what you need to keep warm! I thought this coat would be a great match for the new pencil skirts release by Just Because at the Mainstore. These skirts have plain and lace options. You can also do lace on just the outer panels of the skirt. It was overly complicated with the plaid coat, but it’s truly lovely so do check these out! My adorable shoes are from fri.day and you can get them at Kustom9 through March 10th. I love the bows and the straps. I’m a sucker for any sort of Mary Jane type shoe, although these are called Elsie Janes!

Spring In Her Step

Now, I had heard a rumor… maybe you’ve heard it, too. But the rumor was that Mallory Cowen of LAQ would soon be releasing a Bento mesh head. I decided to ask Mallory and she has confirmed that this is true! I’m super excited about this because I truly loved both of the heads she released before Bento hit the grid. I don’t know when the new head is being released, but I am confident it will be stunning!

I’m wearing Maxine with the Sophia applier in these pics. If you’re not waiting for Bento and want a new head, I definitely recommend trying one of LAQ’s. They’re both lovely. I am wearing the new Tokyo eyes released at Izzie’s. These come with system eyes, mesh eyes and Catwa appliers. I went for a bit of heterochromia and paired one Amber eye with one Teal! I am really fussy about the eyes I wear in SL, but I love these so much. They’re different for me, but in a good way for sure! Incidentally, I also shot both of these pics on the Izzie’s sim. It’s still winter, but not sure how much longer that will be the case. The Fiore necklace by Cae is at Whimsical through March 3rd. There are also matching earrings (not shown here) and you can buy the set or the individual pieces.

Memento Mori & Salem

Memento Mori closed unexpectedly early. This happened because of people taking advantage of its location to cam to the Epiphany sim so they could shop before the event was open. This is a huge problem in an event like The Epiphany because it’s a 100% gacha event and people shopping that way early can sell stuff before the event is even open. It’s really unfair to designers. Also, since there are very specific scripts involved in the event, a machine might look setup and not actually be done. So basically, to sum it up, this is why we can’t have nice things.

But fear not! Memento Mori is going to reopen after The Epiphany opens! You’ll be able to return to the event to shop. Some designers may have opted to put their items out in their Mainstores, so if there was something you had your eye on, check there, too. So stay tuned for the return of this awesome event! Here’s a link to the blog with all the info.

I am heading to bed in a couple of moments because we leave for a whirlwind road trip in uhm 5 hours. EEP. So no more chatter from me. Just pics, with the credits to follow!

Where the ocean meets the land

I fell head over heels in love with this adorable Alice Project hair released at Hair Fair 2016. The (literal) hair bow and braid are so sweet and just perfectly done. I knew this was one I’d need to shoot from the back, to really show how gorgeous it is, but the front is very pretty, too. I’m wearing the frilled swim bottom in bloom that is part of Neve’s recent, ginormous swim collection release. What’s cool is you can mix and match the tops and bottoms, making these really customizable. But I decided to be a bit sassy and just wear the cute, ruffly bottom for this pic!

where the ocean meets the land

I wanted to show you the new LAQ mesh head, Trinity. This is LAQ’s first foray into mesh heads, and I really love it. The shape of the face is so beautifully done. There are a few things that particularly stand out for me about LAQ’s head. First off, it’s OMEGA compatible out of the box. No add on to buy or wear. You can wear any OMEGA applier you’d like with it. Secondly, it has a really nice, clean hud. It’s very user friendly and not overly complicated, which is something I think is a particular bonus for anyone who has wanted a mesh head, but maybe has felt overwhelmed by all the huds and options. I’m wearing the built in default applier, which is called Wilma, and is also available for sale at the LAQ store, so if you like the applier but are attached to your current head (no pun intended), you can demo it and see if you like it on that head (as long as it’s OMEGA compatible). There are also multiple other appliers available for it, including some of LAQ’s more popular older skins, like Elena. Also, I’m still wearing the Jennilynn hair here, so you can see how sweet and pretty the front bangs are.

Trinity

Hair Fair 2016 wraps up this weekend, closing with Bandana Day on Sunday, July 31st. This annual event is truly amazing, and something I always look forward to, so be sure to look out for my Bandana Day ensemble on Sunday! In the meantime, be sure you go and grab your own bandanas. They’re only L$50 per bandana, with 100% of the proceeds going to charity, and there are – as always – some truly incredible and creative options to choose from… even if you’re not a blogger, it’s a great cause and you get something fun and unique out of it!

Perfectly imperfect

So, there’s a new club opening Sunday called Altitude. Actually, it’s more of a destination venue than a club. It’s designed for live music performances, which is really cool and something I used to enjoy a lot of in SL (before I became a platform dweller ๐Ÿ˜› ) In honor of the grand opening, Valentina E. Couture has made this sexy outfit as a launch gift! This outfit will only be available during the big debut event, from 12 pm to 5 pm SLT Sunday, September 13th! So don’t miss out… take the opportunity to go check out a new venue AND snag an awesome gift at the same time. Oh, and my adorable shoes are from fri.day, for the new Collabor88. This month’s witchy theme has been super popular, and it may still take a few tries to get in, but oh my, it is worth the effort once you do.

Living Room Star

Now, please bear with me while I get personal. And wordy.

You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful. ~Amy Bloom

I love that quote. I think we live in a world that encourages this quest for flawlessness and perfection, and no matter how perfectly that foundation covers your “flaws,” they still exist. Not to mention, the most beautiful parts of ourselves aren’t the parts that show on the outside. Who we are as individuals isn’t contingent upon our skin being perfect, a number on the scale, the size of our pants or any other external thing. It’s about our personalities, and this is where true beauty lies. And even then, we’re still not perfect. No one is… and the quest for it just tends to leave us feeling inferior, self-conscious, empty and frustrated.

In Second Life, it’s possible to be physically “perfect,” whatever “perfection” might look like to us personally. And actually, it’s hard to NOT be perfect in some respects. Most skins are flawless, gorgeous works of art. And not that I don’t appreciate that, because I do. I appreciate beauty, in all of its forms. But sometimes I find myself wanting SL to be a little… more realistic. A little less perfect. Last year, I went from being a (smallish) medium in standard sizing to a very lush large. It was a big change. Most of you will have noticed that the size difference from medium to large is quite a jump. Much more pronounced than the difference from small to medium. When mesh first came out I was between a small and medium and I went smaller. The idea of making my avatar larger was so… distressing. And I didn’t want to admit that to myself, let alone to anyone else. But it’s true.

I’ve struggled with a RL eating disorder and body acceptance pretty much my entire life. I was a fat kid, a fat teen and I’m a fat adult. And I say “fat” merely as a descriptor, but oh it’s such a loaded word. It shouldn’t be, anymore than saying “I’m tall” or “I have brown eyes.” But our culture abhors fat, and strives to do everything to eradicate it where possible. I decided I wanted my SL shape to be fuller figured. I still wouldn’t call my av “fat,” but comparatively speaking she is… particularly in the blogging/fashion world of SL, where it seems most people tend to be thinner. In reality, even though to me, a (real life) person of a comparable size isn’t “fat,” I suspect that if you went by the (useless) BMI charts the woman in question would be considered “overweight,” if not “obese.” But size is relative, in some respects, and what is “thin” or “fat” varies depending on perspective, too. I have never and will never be that person who goes into any store and easily finds clothes that fit, perfectly, without trouble. Though it may seem strange I’d want to relive that experience in Second Life, I have worked very hard on eating disorder recovery and body acceptance in real life, and it occurred to me last year that my avatar being so close to a societally idealized shape was not a healthy thing for me. It should be noted that Lucie’s build is really nothing like my RL one, but it still feels more true to myself. It was a matter of finding the balance between fantasy and reality that wouldn’t messing with my head… but I still often wished for a fuller face.

Enter Mallory Cowen, the talented creator behind LAQ, who has recently introduced skins that are exactly what I’ve been craving in my SL. Particularly Elise, which I’m wearing below. Elise comes with a “built in” double chin. There’s a tattoo layer for a “simple” chin, too, for those who love the skin but don’t want a double chin. Her features are fuller and I just love this skin so much. You can also buy the double chin tattoo separately for use with other LAQ skins (and you may be able to match them to other brands, but I’d demo first, to be sure). My cute fortune cookie necklace is a new release from Cae for The Mix, and which you can grab at the Mainstore.

Perfectly Imperfect

It struck me as I photographed this skin, trying to find a light that didn’t minimize the double chin, how… counter-intuitive that is, how even now, with all the work I’ve done to accept myself as I am today, I’d probably cringe if lighting made my double chin seem even more pronounced. I would immediately recognize what I was doing, and shut down the negative self-talk. But it would probably still happen, particularly on a bad day. But that’s what I mean… no one is perfect. We all have our problems and flaws, and trying to deny that or trying to “erase” them, well… for me, at least, that’s like trying to erase a part of who I really am. And that’s just not something I am willing to do anymore.

I applaud Mallory for her work. It’s something I think SL really needed, and it’s going to be great for RPers (she did several more mature skins, too). Check out the LAQ blog for more pics, and I plan to blog some of her other newer skins, too! I look forward to seeing what she does next.

The blogger’s closet

Festival Of Sin II has been so much fun so far! It’s winding down, and closes September 5th, so I wanted to share some goodies from the event before it’s over!

I love the hair MINA did for Lust. It’s so lush and sexy. The shoes from fri.day for Vanity are gorgeous, sexy and versatile. I’ve paired them with a stunning new release from coldLogic’s new brand neve (more on neve to come soon!). This dress is so pretty, with its lacy texture and (though they’re covered by my hair here) dainty straps. I’m using Exposeur’s glam Luxury Closet gacha for Greed at FOS II as a backdrop for this look. I thought it did a pretty great job of representing what a blogger’s closet might look like, if SL bloggers actually had closets and not inventories. Though come to think of it, mine would probably be more cluttered and less organized! ๐Ÿ˜›

The Blogger's Closet

In this picture, I’m wearing Blueberry’s recently released yoga pants with items from Uber. My top is Miss Chelsea and my hair is Truth, and both can be found at Uber. The gym bag next to me, by Bueno, is also at Uber. My sleepy koala friend is by +Pepper+ and is at Festival Of Sin II in Sloth. The beautiful barn I’m using as my yoga studio is from Pixel Mode’s Arcade release. This release has NO rares! Even this gorgeous barn build is a common. The Arcade is now open, and runs all month so if you can’t get in yet, don’t fret! You have time.

Koalas can sleep through anything

I was honored to be chosen as a Hottie Cooterati staff blogger, so I’ve blogged some pics over there, but I wanted to share them here, too.

This one was taken on the FOS II sim, in the Sloth section with a fellow FOS II blogger.ย The builds are spectacular, and honestly it’s worth going for that alone, but there are so many goodies to be had, too. You can read the full credits on this post here.

Seen at the Sloth Motel

This one features Schadenfreude’s Acedia table, which comes in a clean version, too. I also have one of Anya Ohmai’s free sponsor gifts featured here, a snow globe designed for Hopscotch. You can read all about this post here.

Spiders in the attic

Finally, in this picture I’m wearing Alice Project’s sexy bedhead hair for Lust, Baiastice’s stunning gown for Vanity and Cae’s serpent bracelet for Envy, along with one of her gacha rings for Greed. You can get all the details here.
