We <3 Role-Play!

The June edition of We ❤ Role-Play is winding down, so I wanted to show you some a couple of the items I loved from this round before it ends. In these pics I’m wearing the shieldmaiden outfit from Exalted, which even comes with these gorgeous boots. My circlet is from Keystone. Be sure to stop by We ❤ Role-Play and check out all the goodies before the end of the month.

Vigilance

The skin I am wearing in this post is a new face from Essences. Tila can be found at the current edition of The Dressing Room Fusion for just L$70 in three brand new tones. I’m wearing Medium 01 here, and I am especially in love with the lips on this skin. They look so natural and so realistic. I like a lightly glossy lip. My hair is Hope, a recent release from Truth.

Why I Relay

Trigger warning: I discuss cancer fairly bluntly in this post, and I just wanted to provide a sort of proceed with caution for anyone that may find this a difficult or painful topic. ~L.

I walked around the blogger preview for Fantasy Faire waiting for a phone call. I’d had a suspicious mole biopsied ten days earlier. That morning, around 10 am, I finally heard the words, “the biopsy was negative. It’s not cancer.” I heard those words as I was browsing Fantasy Faire, and it just struck me how it could’ve gone the other way.

Cancer runs rampant in my family. I know the odds are it will be me someday. I am vigilant and watchful, but I refuse to let it take over my life. There’s too much joy, beauty and love to be found, to be experienced. But I’m one of the lucky ones. Right now I just have to watch.

Watcher

I know so many amazing, strong, smart, fiery people who have been down this road. I relay for them. The following is just the short list, but there are so many others, both SL and RL for whom I relay.

My great-grandfather died from leukemia, without even knowing he was sick until he developed pneumonia. He was diagnosed while in the hospital. He never returned home. I relay for him.

My (paternal) grandmother fought a seemingly endless battle against bladder cancer. She went in and out of remission about 10 times over a period of 15 years. She finally beat it, only to have had her kidneys utterly destroyed by the radiation treatments, and to have permanent nerve damage that made it difficult for her to walk. I relay for her.

My (maternal) grandmother has fought not one, not two, but three distinct types of cancer in just the past few years alone. Two different breast cancers and a rare form of lung cancer. She had part of her lung removed. She’s had two rounds of chemo. Years ago, she had pre-cancerous growths in her colon, and had to have over 3 feet of it removed. She’s also had pre-cancerous skin growths. I relay for her.

My grandmother’s sister, my great-aunt, had breast cancer in the 1980s. She felt the lump, but was terrified and paralyzed by fear. She waited too long to seek treatment, and the breast cancer spread to her bones. She saw doctor after doctor and was used as a guinea pig in various “studies” by less-than-honest “physicians.” It ultimately cost her her life, and a very painful death. I relay for her.

My great-grandmother lived to be 88. One weekend in late September 2000, she was gently scolded by my grandmother (her daughter-in-law and next door neighbor) for hanging her laundry out on the clothesline (instead of using the dryer). “Oh, but it’s such a lovely autumn day and it won’t stay this warm much longer,” she argued. Less than a week later we found out she had pancreatic cancer. She died the day before Halloween, but she was actually oddly fortunate. Pancreatic cancer is known to be rapidly progressive, but also often horribly painful, and she had very little pain. She felt she’d had a good life. She was happy, and able to die at home, as she wanted. I relay for her.

My grandfather had bladder cancer. They caught it early, and he had six weeks of chemo. It went into full remission. I relay for him.

My childhood friend, at the age of 36, found out he had leukemia. He’d felt rundown for a few weeks, and thought he had the flu. It was quite a surprise to find himself rush admitted to the hospital for blood transfusions and chemo. He has two young children. He’s now in remission. I relay for him.

My mother had pre-cancerous cells in her cervix. They probably would’ve remained undiscovered until it had turned into cancer, if not for the fact she’d gotten pregnant with my sister. Nearly 23 years later, thanks to the laser surgery to remove the cells, she’s still cancer free. However, with both her aunt and mother developing breast cancer, she is awaiting her own genetic test to find out if she’s a carrier. She’s already been a warrior for my grandmother, taking her to all of her many doctors’ appointments and chemo treatments, and always helping to get the answers needed when perhaps my grandmother wouldn’t have otherwise pushed (and without she might not today be in remission from three different cancers). I relay for her.

My father-in-law died from complications caused by chemo treatments he was undergoing for a very rare form of leukemia. I relay for him.

I’ve had to get lab work done once every three to four months for the past two years due to chronic, idiopathic leukocytosis (unexplained, long-term, high white blood cell count). I’ve had genetic testing done to see if I am a carrier for the genetic marker for leukemia (I am thankfully not). I know, though, that if any of these results come back over a certain mark, I will be going back to the oncologist to be evaluated for treatment. I know that every four months or so, I will wait, anxiously, for results that will probably be okay. But maybe not. I try to not dwell on it, but I’d be lying to not admit this… I also relay for myself.

I relay for every person who didn’t get to hear the words “you don’t have cancer.” I relay knowing someday it could very well be me, or my husband, or my mom… or my sister or any one of my friends of family members.

I relay for the hope that someday no one will have to even wonder or worry about whether or not they have cancer.

I relay because I care. Because it’s personal. Because it’s one, simple, tiny thing I can do to potentially help millions.

Guardian of the Light

If you want to relay, too… stop by Fantasy Faire 2014 and check out the magic. With eleven sims in this event, there’s truly something for everyone. And even if you find absolutely nothing you want to buy, you will see donation kiosks all over the sims. Just drop some Lindens in one. Any amount adds to the donation total. Even if it’s just one single L. You can even purchase a RL Fantasy Faire pendant, in a wide variety of colors and materials, here. How cool is that?!? You can also donate online!

Cancer touches so many of our lives. I don’t think I’ve ever met a single person who hasn’t been affected, either directly, or indirectly, by cancer. To me, that makes the RFL events personal for all of us. So my question now is… will you relay, too? To learn about why some other bloggers relay, visit the Why I Relay challenge page and check out the comments.

Start your journey here. Fairelands Junction For a full list of slurls and stores, visit Fantasy Faire’s excellent website. But hurry… this amazing event ends tomorrow, May 11th.

Oh, the horror

Horrorfest 2013 opened this weekend! This timely event is not only full of fun, freaky goodies. It’s also a fundraiser for the Epilepsy Therapy Project. In addition to lots of awesome items for sale, and gachas Horrofest also features a hunt. For more info you can check out the official blog.

For Horrorfest, Infiniti Poses has an awesome gacha set called Victim featuring poses with chalk outlines. These also include cement slabs, so you can create your own “stage” for the pics. I went to PSY City to shoot mine, so I didn’t need the cement. My dress is Sakide’s donation item for Horrorfest. This dress has two versions, and I am wearing the shorter one. I’m also wearing the cute SLink compatible tights fri.day has for the Horrorfest hunt.

The Future Looks Bleak

Glam Affair has released “Horror” versions of three skins, including the popular Neva, Candy (which was Glam’s gorgeous Arcade skin) and their gorgeous brand new release Vera. In this post, I am wearing Candy Horror 02. These skins are available at the Mainstore, and include special appliers in the skin tone for all your SLink, Lolas and Phat Azz needs. My hair is the newly released Harley from Truth, and I love it. I have a thing for short styles, especially when they are all sexily mussed up like this one!

Oh, the horror

Be sure to check out Horrorfest before it ends for all your spooky fun Halloween needs.

Last call for Collabor88

A new round of Collabor88 will open this weekend, so be sure to go down and grab the many, many birthday goodies before the current 2nd anniversary edition ends! Here are some of the amazing things you can grab.

This “dress” from Tee*fy is actually two pieces, allowing you to mix and match. They are sold separately, so you can buy the color combos that most appeal to you. I love the top, with it’s plunging neckline. My adorable peacock – whom I named Polly, of course – is from MishMish and there are multiple versions and color options. The version I have in this pic is an attachment you actually wear. Be warned, though. You may die of cute when you remove the peacock and it says “I’m going to miss you, (your name here)!”

My jewelry is from Noodles, and is also at Collabor88. This set is named in honor of Millie Gears, who was a friend to so many in the SL community, and whom we sadly recently lost far too soon. It’s a beautiful tribute to her.

The desert calls to me

Another Collab item I fell hard for is this hair from Monso. I believe it has materials enabled, but alas if I were to attempt to use the official viewer I might have a breakdown. Still, even without materials, it is absolutely stunning. I love the depth of the textures on this hair, and the style is just utterly adorable. My skin is also utterly adorable, and it’s the new full release of Cho from Essences. Cho was released with brand new, stunning skin tones. I am wearing Peche. I don’t think I’ve ever owned a cuter skin than Cho. I feel slightly exotic and beyond cute when I wear it. And admittedly, a bit young. Which, let’s face it, ain’t a bad thing.

I wanted a slightly exotic setting for these pics, so I went over to Izzie’s Mainstore. Izzie always done an amazing job with her sim, and it is currently set to look like an African desert, and I just loved this little house I found there.

I am not sure when Collabor88 will close for setup for the next round, so hurry and head on over! This is truly a not-to-be-missed edition.

I know I’ve been a bit quiet lately. I was battling some feeling yucky in RL, and I also just took over another event in SL, so I’ve been a bit busy. But I’m feeling better, and I am gearing up to show off all of my wonderful Arcade goodies, so stay tuned!

Happy weekend!

Collab meets Hair Fair

I was in the middle of shooting pics of an utterly adorable outfit, skin and some accessories I snagged at Collabor88 when the lovely Irischka Hotshot of Iren passed me her Hair Fair pack. I fell so in love that I changed hairstyles mid shoot. It’s actually appropriate because the hair I had been wearing, in the pic below, is one of Exile’s Hair Fair 2012 styles!

Snow Red

I utterly love this dress from Tres Blah for Collabor88. I may have to buy some more colors before the round ends in August. If you haven’t gotten to the July round yet, you really need to because this round is absolutely superb. It might be my favorite ever! I have lots of goodies, far more than just in this post, so stay tuned for more Collab/Hair Fair combos from me in the coming week!

I thought this Iren hair was so wonderfully romantic, and it fit so nicely with the Midsummer Night’s Dream theme Collab has happening this round. A Midsummer Night’s Dream happens to be my favorite Shakespearean play, btw, so it’s not really a surprise I loved this round so. These shoes are SLink add ons from BOOM, and oh, they’re lovely! I knew when I saw the blue dress with the red belt I had to have it, and the red shoes. I have to confess, I feel a bit like a redheaded modern day Snow White in this outfit.

Collab Meets Hair Fair

I have been a fan of Essences skins for a while now, but I think the one they did for Collabor88 is my favorite one yet! Her name is Cho, and she’s just utterly adorable. I will be honest, since I am not one to deny my SL vanity anyway (hell, it’s in my blog tagline)… I kept saying “OMG I AM SO CUTE!” whilst wearing this skin.

Essences - Cho (Collabor88)

Just as I finished shooting this look, I was given previews of Miamai’s Hair Fair releases. This one caught my eye because of how dramatic it is, so I decided to throw it on and strike a pose to show y’all. I was apparently too lazy to put on a shirt, though. Don’t get too excited… I may be shirtless, but I’m still relatively decent! This hair is really more about the hat, and you can even hide the hair so it’s a unisex style. There’s a hud and you can change the color of the ribbon and the beads, too. It’s a versatile style! Though you can’t see the gorgeous face, my skin is one of Glam Affair’s Collabor88 releases (a better view to come soon). It’s a stunning skin, and you’ll definitely not want to miss out on it!

In Profile

Hair Fair 2013 comprises of four sims full of wonderful hair goodness! You can check out Seraphim’s gallery here, to help you with your shopping, or you can join the Hair Fair Demo Group in world to get demos to help you make choices without the inevitable lag of a crowded event. Hair Fair’s organizers have done a lot to help reduce lag, but please be patient and remember that any crowded SL event will have some degree of lag! Also, please remember this is a charity event, one that benefits children who have lost their hair due to medical conditions/treatments. Visit the Wigs For Kids website to learn more about this awesome charity.

More from Hair Fair, Collab and other events soon!

Summerfest Last Call!

Summerfest is an awesome event that is nearly over. You have just a few short hours left to go grab some great goodies, including the oh-so-popular Ohmai pet otters (and otter avs) you may have been seeing all over Flickr. I’m just gonna shut up and post pics ’cause you need to hurry and get there NOW!

My adorable sunglasses are from Noodles for Summerfest. I shot this pic on the beach at the event, where the adorable otters are hanging out near the water’s edge. My outfit is from another event that ends this weekend, My Attic. It’s only L$95 for both the tank and the jeans and there are a bunch of great colors.

It's all about the otters

My skin is also from Summerfest. It’s Glam Affair’s Summer. I’ll have a better shot of that skin later in this post. But first, a quick closeup of my nails and the adorable Noodles charm bracelet from The Arcade.

Summer Vacation

Also from My Attic, this adorable dress from SySy’s. It comes in so many colors your head will spin and you’ll have a hard time choosing. My jewelry is from Handverk, also at My Attic, as is the hair from Exile and the nails for my SLink hands (from Flair). My adorable peep toe shoes are a SLink add on shoe for the medium feet from Ingenue at Collabor88.

Pretty In Peach

Okay, and here’s the closeup of Summer I promised. The freckles on the face are just so perfectly adorable.

Summer by Glam Affair

Be sure to go check out My Attic, The Arcade and Summerfest before they end this weekend! Start with Summerfest, since it ends tonight!
