Electric Youth

I feel like the era of my tweens and early teens (aka late 80s/early 90s) is suddenly super popular again. From the recent debut of the Rewind event, with it’s 90’s theme, to some of the fun color combos at various events (like Uber), it just feels a bit surreal.

So maybe it’s not surprising that I found myself feeling a big nostalgic, and that before long said nostalgia led me to listen to Electric Youth, which came out in 1989. This iconic Debbie Gibson album inspired a line of cosmetics and a fragrance, all of which I – naturally – had. See, I was fascinated by Debbie Gibson. She wrote all of the songs on her album, and she also produced six of the ten tracks on the album entirely on her own. It was only with her first album that I had learned a strange lesson… not all singers are songwriters. Up until Out of the Blue got a lot of attention for having been written by a 16 year-old, it never dawned on me that singers didn’t also write their song lyrics or music. This is undoubtedly the result of being a songwriter’s daughter; my dad was in bands my entire childhood, and they wrote everything they did that wasn’t a cover and my dad was the primary lyricist. So it kind of never occurred to me that other people didn’t write their own songs.

At any rate, this revelation made Debbie Gibson a hero of mine. I was six years younger than her, but she was doing amazing things. Then she became Eponine in Les Mis (“On My Own” was “my” song; I sang it in 8th grade and related deeply to it), and that just sealed it for me. Debbie Gibson was totally amazing.

So, this was my tribute to that time in my life… a skort (!) and chunky plastic ring from Decoy, a cropped t-shirt with the word “dazed” from Tee*Fy at N21, some curly pigtails and blunt bangs, brand new from Truth and available at the current round of Uber. Uber has a brand new layout to help make shopping easier., and a great big bubble of pink gum, thanks to Catwa. Oh, and the perfect 90s-esque photo backdrop courtesy of Mons! I swear I know someone with framed prints that looked like this wall.

Pop Sugar

I just got the Catwa (bento) Kimberly head, as a birthday gift from a dear friend. I chose Kimberly over Catya and Lilo, Catwa’s other two heads (another one, Lona, is either newly out or about to be released) neither of which felt very “me,” even with shape changes. But Kimberly does! It’s very cute and works well with fuller lips and larger eyes. I am featuring some items from the February Powder Pack here. This skin applier is Kelly, from Amara. I wasn’t familiar with Amara but I loved this applier. That’s one of the fun things about these subscription boxes. You get to try out some stores you don’t know! I’m wearing the Powder Pack eyeliner/shadow by DeeTaleZ, which was tintable, so I made it this very 90s teal shade to match my hair. And the lipgloss is from Pink Fuel’s Powder Pack release. My lashes are also from Powder Pack, by Bold & Beauty. I had some trouble adjusting mesh eyes to fit in my Catwa head (and unlike the LeLutka heads, you must use mesh eyes). While Catwa’s heads come with rigged eyes, I wanted more options. Ultimately, the eyes I found easiest to adjust to my shape were from theSkinnery’s Palermo collection. These also have an OMEGA applier version, as well as system eyes. Oh and the adorable moles are another Powder Pack release, from okbye!

Electric Youth

If you missed the Powder Pack you can buy it later, but please note that the original price is $L1500 and after the price is L$3000 so it’s worth it if you love makeup and skins! Plus, there is going to be a LeLutka version starting later this month… now I just have to figure out which version I want! Gah!

Pastel Winter

Since my 2nd week in SL, I have been a redhead. I’ve done a handful of blog posts (often fantasy ones) where I used a different color, but even then I usually went for one with red highlights, if possible. But for some reason I found myself recently compelled to try something new. I decided that pastels would be pretty on this soft skin, with these lovely violet/rainbow eyes from Buzzeri (which are at The Epiphany). This is kind of a big deal for me, because I’m pretty sure that somewhere I’ve said – at least once – that Lucie would always be a redhead. And odds are, I’ll go back to red soon. But I want to experiment a bit first, I think.

In yesterday’s post, I mentioned that I would show you a closeup of Glam Affair’s pretty Hanna applier from Memento Mori. The important thing to know is that while there are a couple of pretty, more natural options on this skin, it also comes in versions with blood! Because Memento Mori, of course, is an event that has a macabre vibe. I do, however, appreciate that Aida Ewing did a couple of versions that were softer. The tone is Polar (which just so you know is NOT built into the Maitreya hud – I had to go get the appliers for it at the Mainstore. It’s also not built into the hud for Vista’s bento hands, so I have the Maitreya hands on here), which is so pale it’s kind of fantasy in and of itself, but this super soft makeup made it look so wintry and I fell in love with it. My hair is a recent Mainstore release from Truth, and my adorable Love Birds necklace is by Cae. It has two little leaves you can customize with initials of your choice (or you can hide one or both). Mine has an L and an R (for “Radagast,” my husband’s SL name). My lashes are Izzie’s for LeLutka, and I love all the different styles you get.

Time for a change

I also have to share the amazing Aurora dress that Annie Melson of Just Because released at Uber. The story behind this design is utterly adorable. Annie’s teenage daughter drew this design! So she made the dress in SL, and she’s paying her daughter for her work. Also, they plan to do more together! It’s just the loveliest story of encouraging her daughter’s dreams and being an awesome mom. I completely adore this. I have said it many times, but Annie is one of the kindest, most genuine people I’ve met in SL. And she’s so talented, a trait she and her daughter clearly share!

My shoes are Grace from Gos. If you missed it, he recently updated a bunch of his older shoes to be compatible with Maitreya and SLink bodies. I’ve always loved his work, so this made me super happy!

Bubbly

This is the first of my Hair Fair 2016 posts. This fabulous event is open, and of course part of the proceeds from every sale will go to Wigs For Kids. It’s a great cause, with a ton of hair designers. There’s something to suit everyone’s tastes there, so definitely check it out. You can find all of the information you need, including a map, on the official blog. I’m wearing one of ISON’s lovely releases – Marie – in these photos. I’m also wearing one of Catwa’s newer head releases, Dyana, with the Bambi applier that Pink Fuel released for it at Kawaii Project.

My cute little dress is from Blueberry, and the strappy, sexy heels I’m wearing are from Glamistry. This adorable pose, which comes with the bubbles prop you see, is from Infiniti and is available at The Season’s Story. I’m using the Trompe Loleil Zohra Oasis, which is available at the current round of Uber. You have a few more days before this round closes and there are lots of awesome items there, so go check it out.

Here’s a better look at the shoes! The BBQ set you see in all three pics is from Dynasty’s release for The Epiphany. It’s a super cute set, and one of many amazing things you can find at this round of the event!

Over the rainbow

The Pulse Fundraiser is winding down. It will close in just under 24 hours, so if you haven’t gone yet, hurry! If you’re not sure what I am talking about, this fundraiser is benefitting the families and victims of the horrific incident that took place last month at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. There are a ton of fabulous designers participating, not to mention auction boards where you can bid on some fabulous people and/or prizes.

I wanted to do something sparkly, cheerful and dreamy. So I went to StoryBrooke Gardens and, just by chance, found this giant book. And the quote on the page… “hope springs eternal.” It just seemed perfect. I’m the odd mix of realist and idealist. I often say I’m a realistic idealist. I want to believe change is possible, that things can be different. That the world, as ugly as it can be, is also still full of so much that is beautiful and good. And when I see the SL community come together for an event like this, it’s just that much easier for me to hold on to that hope.

I’m wearing a lot of items you can find at the event. My hair is from Exile, the dress is Valentina E. The body glitter and bracelet are both Izzie’s. My shoes are Reign. The adorable star “freckles” are Vile Cult.

Over The Rainbow

In this pic, you can better see the cute star tattoos, along with the beautiful applier Glam Affair released for Uber. Although this applier was designed with Annie in mind, I am wearing it with Alice here… and I think it’s pretty adorable!

Rainbow Sprinkles

Definitely be sure to run over to the Pulse Fundraiser before it ends. It’s worth it! You get to support a great cause while buying beautiful things. Or bidding on beautiful prizes/people!

The Forgotten Princess

This is a story blog. Credits and details will follow the story. Warning, it’s a bit of a sad tale.

In a legend about a far away land called Lucica, there was a beautiful queen who had ruled her kingdom peacefully with grace and dignity for more than two decades. Queen Justina had lost her husband ten years prior, and their daughter, Mairwen was about to come of age and suitors had begun to seek her hand in marriage. A widowed king from a neighboring kingdom desperately wanted to marry the beautiful Mairwen. Mairwen, however, was determined to marry for love, not convenience. She did not like King Amon, and did not wish to be his Queen. Beyond this, as her mother’s only heir, she wanted to remain in her own kingdom, and King Amon would have taken her to his kingdom to become the stepmother for his young daughter Amme. The shallow young Amme did not like Mairwen, as she was jealous of her would-be stepmother’s beauty, and she did all she could to poison her father’s heart against Mairwen.

But Mairwen paid little attention to Amon or Amee, for Mairwen’s rebellious heart had fallen in love with a commoner named Xander. Xander’s parents had died when he was just 13, leaving him the head of house for his five younger siblings. Xander rose to the challenge, becoming a blacksmith’s apprentice while raising his brothers and sisters. When he and Mairwen met, it was immediately obvious they shared a mutual attraction, but not one based on appearances. No, Mairwen admired the young man who was raising his siblings. She felt his strength of character would someday make him a wonderful king. Xander admired Mairwen’s kindness towards everyone, regardless of their class or status in Lucica. She treated him no differently than anyone else, and while he saw her outer beauty, it was the inner beauty that found him falling in love with the Princess he dared not believe he could ever call his wife. But Mairwen’s mind – and heart – was set on Xander, and she begged Justina for a special exception to the law that stated she must marry royalty. Justina made no promises, but she loved her daughter dearly, and trusted her instincts. She agreed to meet young Xander, and saw in him what her fiery daughter did, and agreed to the union.

Mairwen and Xander’s wedding day arrived, and in the castle by the sea, dawn arrived with a gentle drizzle that faded to reveal the most beautiful rainbow. Justina told Mairwen this was a sign of great fortune, and evidence that her union would be blessed. She did not wish to ruin her daughter’s wedding day with sorrowful news, but she had been told just the day before that her remaining time was counted in mere months. She trusted Xander to care for her daughter, and she knew Mairwen’s good nature and powerful desire to do what was right would leave Lucica in good hands. The wedding was beautiful, with hundreds of white doves released as Xander and Mairwen shared their first kiss as husband and wife.

Unbeknownst to all, King Amon was not prepared to let Mairwen go so easily. Despite his daughter’s protests, he was determined to have her as his. But then Princess Amme heard that Mairwen was to marry a commoner, and knowing her father’s disgust and disregard for common folk, brought this news to him gleefully, for she believed it would finally free her father of his obsession. Amme judged wrong, however. It merely enraged Amon, while fueling his obsession with the beautiful Princess Mairwen.

Amon turned to a dark sorceress to exact revenge on Mairwen and her kingdom. Endora was delighted to help, but her assistance came at a steep price. Amon must sacrifice his only child, and give her to the evil Endora. Amon did not hesitate, and sent his daughter Amme to Endora. Amme was spoiled and selfish, but she also loved her father and his betrayal brought her to tears… the first genuine tears she’d ever cried in her short life. Endora knew this would happen, and bottled the tears carefully. She then locked Amme in a dark dungeon, forcing the child to live out her days without sunlight, food or fresh water. Amme died of loneliness and heartbreak a mere month after her father’s guards had delivered her to the clutches of the evil witch.

Meanwhile, Endora bided her time. She waited for Justina’s illness to worsen, and then cursed the kingdom of Lucica with an outbreak of a sickness the likes of which no one had before seen, using a potion concocted with the tears of Princess Amme. The apothecaries were helpless to find a treatment, let alone a cure. Before long, the illness spread to the castle, though oddly neither Princess Mairwen or her new Prince became ill. But the cursed affliction hit the already weakened Justina, and she was in agonizing pain. Mairwen sat beside her mother, wiping her brow of the fever’s sweat and whispering quiet words of comfort. She told her mother of the blessed news she’d just received. Mairwen was with child. Justina smiled weakly at this news, then took her final breath.

Mairwen’s grief was overwhelming, but she thought of Xander, of how at such a young age he had to take over as both mother and father and sole provider for his five siblings (all of whom now resided in the castle). She knew Lucica and her people needed her strength, so with great sorrow she announced the death of her mother and it was decreed her coronation should take place the next morning. She dressed in the beautiful green gown that her mother had worn on her own coronation day. The gown glittered in the sunlight, shimmering like the waves crashing on the rocks beyond the castle walls.

The Forgotten Princess

Endora did not understand why her spell didn’t work on Xander or Mairwen. Her magic had never failed before, and though the people of Lucica struggled in vain to fight against the magical illness, Endora’s anger flared. In a furious fit of rage, she used her power to break the tower off the castle just as the crowds were to celebrate Mairwen’s coronation. She forced the tower far out to sea, well beyond the reach of the best of the kingdom’s small naval fleet. But the power required for this spell left Endora weak, and Xander forced the devious King Amon to reveal the source of both his wife’s banishment and the kingdom’s horrible affliction. He sought Endora out at great peril and, using the silver, fire forged blade that had belonged to Mairwen’s father King Edmund, Xander stabbed the evil sorceress through her heart. Immediately, the illness afflicting the people of Lucica vanished, and though many lives had been lost, those still suffering were returned to good health.

But nothing could bring back his fair Mairwen. Xander searched for her himself, for years. His military captains searched. But Mairwen’s turret was nowhere to be found. Mairwen could not understand what had happened, and though she believed Xander would never leave her or their unborn child to die, she could no longer fight the feelings of abandonment after months of isolation. She gave birth alone, to a baby boy she called Edmund Xander, in honor of her father and husband. She wrapped the babe in the train of her gown, and knowing she could not possibly hope to keep him alive, called upon sea birds to take him back to Lucica with a note attached, written in her own blood, that simply read, please care for our son… all my love, Mairwen. As the birds carried her child away to safety, she cried out in pain and sorrow; a princess lost to the sea.

Abandoned

Despite her certainty that she’d been forgotten and abandoned, her people did not forget her. Xander raised Prince Edmund, until their son was old enough to be crowned King, and Edmund ruled with the same wisdom and kindness as his grandmother before him. Mairwen’s bravery and strength became a legend passed down through generations, and she became the patron saint to sailors, and Lucica was renamed Mairwen in her memory. But the poor princess could never know how beloved she was, how mourned. She died alone in her turret, a year to the day after being forced from her home by the evil Endora’s violent ire.

Still, it is said that even today, thousands of years later, sailors hear her cries of anguish as they sail past the turret in the sea. Yet the townsfolk of Mairwen live peacefully, and their flag, which features two white doves flying over a beautiful rainbow, waves in the gentle sea breezes over the town square.

The End.

This entire post and story was born of inspiration that struck when I saw the incredible Kimbra gown Just Because released for Uber. Uber’s theme this round is Etheral and I love it. My LeLutka applier is from Glam Affair and my hair is Truth’s release, both also from Uber. My gorgeous engagement/wedding ring combo is Cherish by Cae. As always, it includes a hud with multiple metal options, gem options and band options.

I also happened to buy this incredible prop from Exposeur. If you haven’t heard, Exposeur has an amazing sale going on, designed to raise fund to help RubyStarlight Writer’s ill kitties. You can see her Flickr post about that here. Suffice it to say, Ruby’s cats are dealing with medical issues, and she is trying to raise funds to help get them the care they need. Any pet owner knows this is the worst nightmare… fear for the life and health of your beloved baby. So please, if you’re able to, go buy out Ruby’s store. This incredible prop set – along with many others – can currently be bought for just L$100, and they’re so detailed and well worth the money, plus you’ll be helping Chloe and Brookie, too. All regular poses and gachas are also on sale.

Chocolate Desires

Chocolate is a serious thing. ~Deanna Troi

I very much believe Counselor Troi had the right idea where chocolate was concerned. I mean, it is a serious thing. So the Artisan Fantasy Chocolate Shoppe set for The Epiphany, with all its goodies, spoke to me right away. I mean, c’mon! Truffles… boxes of beautifully wrapped chocolate gifts. I love the wrappings just as much as the chocolates insides sometimes! It’s fun. It feels so posh to buy a box of Godiva all beautifully wrapped for the holiday (whichever one it happens to be!). The cute polka dot lingerie I’m wearing are common items from Blueberry’s Epiphany set, the gorgeous bed is from Sway’s. It was at the December round of Uber, so if it’s not yet in her Mainstore, I imagine it should be soon. The chair in the little room behind me is from Brocante, but through tomorrow you can grab it at the Love To Decorate event. Brocante is the new name for collaborations between floorplan and Consignment, and Brocante items can be found here, along with floorplan’s items. The fawn over the chair is at the floorplan mainstore, and the sign over the bed is a floorplan release for Collabor88. My sparkly, glittery hair is from Olive for The Epiphany. I love the sexy, bedhead look of this one!
